Today i would like to introduce you all to one of my favourite people in the whole world- my Auntie Ang!
you may remember in one of my earlier blogs i mentioned my Narcoleptic aunt, well this is her.
My auntie ang is my godmother and also what i like to think as my surrogate nan, i lost my nan a few years ago now and since then- in my opinion- Ang has stepped in. No one will ever replace my nan but having someone like Ang in my life helps to fill that massive void just a bit.
She is one of the most honest, caring, adorable, funniest people i know, however my poor auntie Ang has a condition called narcolepsy- this means she falls asleep, and the cause?... emotions! so anything from laughing, sadness, being overwhelmed, surprised- you name it and it will send her to sleep.
And has not always had this condition, after an unfortunate car crash the condition appeared and the cure for it? well there is none. There are tablets that can help to control it however the NHS have stopped them in this country, so the only way of getting them is illegally from another country. So until the NHS change their mind my auntie Ang lives with this condition on a daily basis.
The only good thing that comes from all of this is- its bloody hilarious at times!
As protective as i am over Ang, the best thing to do is to laugh and as a family that's what we do!
There was one time in the Autumn, we took the dogs out for a walk, there was leaves and mud everywhere, everyone was covered in dirt, after several jokes- ang went, and what did we do?? we covered her from head to toe in leaves and then convinced all 3 muddy, wet dogs to jump all over her.
When she came round she said the same thing she always says:
" you bastards!"
that's the thing you see, she knows exactly whats going on around her, she can hear and feel everything- she just cant react.
Ive seen her fall with one leg in a boat while the other is still on land, Ive seen her go while snorkeling in the Caribbean and bumping in to a shark, Ive even seen her go in her dinner!
most people don't understand this condition and even when most see it happen it can be pretty scary- the first time i saw it i cried and felt sick with fear, not having a clue what was going on.
there have been many times when we've been on holiday and its happened and people panic, but there we are laughing saying "leave her, she'll be alright in a minute" ha ha.
Even though me and my dad have bets on who can make her go first it really does hurt me deep down that she has to go through this, someone as amazing as ang doesn't deserve it.
An incredible mum, nan, godmother and friend, she is one of those people who will do anything from anyone including a complete stranger.
so next time you see Ang on the underground, and shes looking like shes about to have a snooze just keep an eye on her for me or on the other hand if your on the bus and theres a cute looking mature lady from London who wont stop nattering- tell her a joke, coz you never know it might just be my auntie Ang!
